I loved my time in the beginning during my schools. However, when I came on staff it was very much the frog in the pot. The manipulation from higher ups, the favoritism, and if you were “not the cookie cutter” type, you were shamed. I have a very out going personality and the amount of times I was “slut shamed” by leadership and students (who only heard what leadership said) was insane. To sum it up, glad it happened and very glad it’s over.

I spent six years on staff at YWAM Tyler, and while I’m grateful for the lessons learned and friendships made, my experience was deeply troubling. Leadership at the base often isolates teams, fosters a culture of manipulation, and fails to address misconduct. During my time, a young leader on my team publicly shamed staff into submission, made inappropriate advances toward women, and ultimately left his family for a younger team member. When concerns about his behavior were brought to leadership, nothing was done, and those who spoke up were discredited.

This reflects a larger problem with YWAM Tyler: spiritual manipulation and mismanagement. Many staff members feel stuck, unable to leave because they lack financial stability or job skills. Roles assigned to passionate young people are often menial (working in the base kitchen, lawn care, or restaurant) rather than aligned with their giftings. Meanwhile, facilities go neglected, staff voices are ignored, and finances appear to benefit leadership more than the base as a whole.

Over the years, numerous staff have left disillusioned, and the base has repeatedly struggled with transitioning leadership from its founder. The environment has become stagnant, leaving many passionate individuals burned out or trapped in a toxic cycle.

YWAM Tyler operates in ways that don’t reflect the rest of YWAM. While there are good people there, the system itself is broken and resistant to change. If you’re considering YWAM Tyler, I’d recommend looking at other bases that better reflect YWAM’s mission and values.

Came to Youth With a Mission-Tyler in 1993 and never thought back then that I would become and continue to this day as a missionary. Knew what I wanted to be at the age of nine - a comedian, an astronaut, or President of The United States, but being a missionary was the last thing on my mind. God has a sense of humor. 😁
I do not have any brother, sister, or cousins and yet God has provided many through the ministry and some have taken me in as part of their family as my parent’s generation passes into Eternity.
Is there is better place on Earth?
Probably but, the training is great, many seasoned missionaries on staff who have served all over the world, the people are humble seeking God, and not ridge and legalistic in dealing with helping individuals though their personal challenges.
