This is a wonderful church for anyone looking for a church FAMILY. My children and I love the sermons, children's church, the people and the welcoming atmosphere. In reference to the post about children not being welcomed I would have to say I have experienced the opposite. I do remember several months ago the church did change insurance companies and due to liability reasons they had to require certain aged children not be allowed to go play in the nursery. All children were asked to go to their appropriate class and many emails were sent out to advise us of this. That could possibly have been just a misunderstanding.

I am not officially a member of this church, but my mother has been for over 40 years, from back in the day when it was Boyd Memorial on the West Side. UDCC has been such a wonderful church home for her, especially as she has aged, as the church members help to take care of her as if she were family; I am so grateful for this, as I do not live in Charleston. I have attended church services there with my mother and have always been blown away with the messages that I receive. In my mind, from what I believe of the teachings of Christ, UDCC is an exemplary example of those teachings - compassion for others, service to the underserved, self-sacrifice for the greater good, with a strong sense of social justice, as delivered by Reverend Steven Smith. I could not recommend this church more highly to anyone seeking a Christian home!

Terrible church. My children attended this church with their grandmother for several years while I was in school and working. One day she went in and they were no longer allowed in the children's room with no explanation. If my children miss behaved, that would be one thing (i run a tight ship and have NO problem addressing my childrens misbehaviors) but to never give an explanation or an event that may have caused this is inconsiderate. They have attended this church for something like four years. They expect to go with those sunday instructors on sunday! Its a small church, They have a very small youth group.. Some days my boys were the only two children in there. The fact that they are not a church that nurtures to grow and expand their youth group and then pick and choose which children can go into the youth room will bite them in the bud down the road! The elders pass on and then you won't have much of a church. To properly inform someone why their children are no longer allowed is one thing but to post it on the door, seeing other children attend in the childrens room but them, especially when your children get EXCITED for church and with no notice is not Christian like or does it promote a positive community!

And they do this 6 weeks after my brother died from leukemia. Crappy church practices!! My poor mother lives alone, has given this church her time and energy, and is just devastated.

Disappointing! And negative!
