My son has been training with Charles Orchard for three and a half years at Total Ryu.
He has developed so much self confidence and self esteem in their excellent traditional Japanese Jujitsu classes.
He has also developed a passion for martial arts because of his positive experiences at this dojo.
From everything I have witnessed in person, and what my teenager has told me, Charles has always been very kind, friendly, and encouraging to all of his students.
Charles doesn't boast, but he is very accomplished in many martial arts styles and self defense techniques, and is an excellent and knowledgeable instructor.
Total Ryu also sends their ' mat chats' out to parents and students, as emails, and we find them very informative and helpful. Even as adults.
My son really admires and respects his Sensei Charles Orchard, and enjoys the energy and attitudes of the other students in classes, as well. Because a safe space has been created, where students must be respectful and responsible. Which makes for a positive experience for everyone.
Teaching people to trust themselves and not have a fragile ego, by boosting their self confidence and self esteem like Charles Orchard does for his students, is HUGE. Not all instructors are capable of this. So, it's actually the highest praise I can give.

The staff here is very patient and caring. The kids are all very sweet and respectful, and my son was warmly welcomed and fit right in with the group despite lacking any previous training. We are very happy that he has found such a warm environment to learn.

We love this place. Our son started about a year ago and it has boosted his confidence and the way he carries himself.

I would like to recognize the lead instructor, Charles Orchard. He carries himself with confidence but is very humble. I have never heard him talk about his numerous accomplishments, accreditations or the fact that he has trained military personnel. I find that to be a telling quality in a karate instructor. The owners have good communication and have quickly answered some questions I had after hours. They were flexible when I had to change which class my son attended to accommodate other extracurricular activities that kids inevitably take on.

Cannot recommend this place enough.

Total Ryu has been an incredible experience for my daughters. I love their approach to multi-level / multi-age instruction because it lets kids mentor and learn from each other, AND it's an after-school activity that my Kindergartner and 4th grader can participate in together. Update: It's been a few years and my Kindergartner is now a middle schooler and still attending classes at this dojo. She's formed great friendships with classmates, and is striving toward a black belt.

Hi highly recommend Total Ryu Martial Arts for kids and adults! I took a self defense class as an adult and loved it! It was informative and the instructor even made it fun. I learned so much and feel better about being able to defend myself in the future. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
