It's sad I am choosing to live in my car then go here. The first time I came I was working and while they let me sleep since I worked third shift, I never saw a case worker to help me, I was pretty much on my own with everything. Everytime I went, I had a job and was belittled in front of everyone by the director for simply asking for a bus pass when I started a job I hadn't gotten paid for yet. I was told I was pretty much on my own for items like soap, towels and even washing while the ones that didn't work got everything free. I'd rather be where I am sending for myself and that says a lot about this place. It is ran like a prison and even the staff could be considered correctional officers considering how rude they are to you. Please stay away and look elsewhere.

Speaking in regards to Salvation Army Women's Shelter Birmingham, AL. I resided at this Shelter for about 5 months while waiting on other housing. Well my over all experience was "hell" ! You dont have to be the one with a bad attitude or caused a problem. You can be tolerate being the good person you can be but its just the truth about how this place is. The few members of staff are very rude and don't treat people with compassion. They cant keep new hires because no one wants to treat people like they do. Alot of things they should have such as bath towels, soap, under garments , personal care items that women need they say they don't have. Women have to go without bath towels to dry off with. Yes, I understand things run out but I myself have donated some things while I was there, but shortly thereafter, when a new roommate went to ask for a few items, they were told there weren't any. There are staff members that tend to take things home, especially something new and nice! The Salvation Army Women's Shelter needs a complete Overhaul, New Staff , New Rules & Regulations a Complete Transformation! That shelter is all in one a nursing home, ( elderly, handicap) alcohol, drug abuse, mental institute ( mentally unstable, cant take care if themselves, skitzo, unmedicated), (men with children on the womens side of shelter) and women with childern, Youth starting at age 18. Everyone is put together in one big lump battling their own issues and everyone else's, too. It's traumatizing! Staff does not support helping you with housing resources or you moving forward connecting you with organizations or arranging organizations to come in to help people, especially those that can't help themselves. They leave Everything up to you even with those that can't on their own. They also charge a percentage rent for those that work 30-40hour work week and from those whom receive disability income. A money order must be payable each month. This is just to live in the Shelter itself i.e on a Cot Or bed 8 women per room ( not the apartment rooms upstairs that they keep vacant) although those too are charged rent as well but they hardly ever allow any one to move upstairs in transitioning. Many have raised concern while those that " don't " pay because they have little to no income from those that do pay but its no difference in the living there except you're paying money verses those that arent able to. On weekends everyone is put out even those that pay rent. Once you are out you can not be nowhere on the premises. When you are sick you can't stay in to recover even with a doctors excuse. Many illegal things are going on in the shelter that they overlook. The few staff are overworked and tend to not care about nothing. The bathroom needs alot of work, sinks are not working the water sensors need replaced. The toilets are constantly out of order was down to 2 working and 4 not working. The showers have heavy mold, the wall tiles have fallen off and never replaced, shower curtains are old torn dry roitted , showers heavily stained. Their mops are always dirty and constantly being reused all over the building, spreading germs from the bathroom, to bedrooms, to hallways. While nothing is perfect ; this place can be ran a whole lot better!

I visited this agency as a member of an allocation team. The facility is conveniently located for the communities it serves. It’s clean, safe and provides excellent services for its clients. I was very impressed with its educational programs and the quality of all services it provides to the community. The leadership and staff are EXCELLENT, they truly care about the people they serve!!! I highly recommend making donations to support The Salvation Army!!

This was the worst experience I've ever had. It was so bad I was forced to leave. My stuff was stolen and broken into, the locks I bought were picked, I was attacked (verbally) and threatened by roommates whose seemed to be drug addicts and loose women. I would inform staff of the behavior, they would be passive about the situation, dismissive and oftentimes side with the people that were clearly guilty of what they were were doing against me. I followed the chain of command but my concerns were dismissed. I've had to file not only one but two police reports against a few of these women because of physical harassment/ theft. I was a woman at this shelter who was not a drug addict, good hygiene, worked a job, literally just in a season of transition was treated badly. While women that are clearly dope fiends and thieves are treated with respect . I literally experienced jealousy and hate from some of the staff as well as residents. Staff sat back and saw some of the things take place and chose to do nothing. I wouldn't recommend this place due to the fact that they will allow crimes to be committed against you and have people threatened your safety while you here.

The customer service during lunch is horrible. The lady running the show needs to be reminded that she can quickly be in the shoes of those who they serve. But I do love the services that The Salvation Army offers.

I recently drove a friend back to this location. It was much nicer than expected. The campus seemed very clean, organized, almost had a wow factor. This is not what I had pictured it to be.
Everyone there waved and was friendly.
