It's been a year since my mother moved into the Oakmont Redwood City, and I am thoroughly impressed with the care she has received. The staff are not only professional but also genuinely compassionate, ensuring that my mother feels valued and well cared for. The facilities are well-maintained and offer a comfortable, and welcoming environment. Overall, we couldn't be more pleased with the level of attention and dedication provided by everyone here.

My advice would be to look somewhere other than Oakmont.

The facility itself is new and beautiful and there a few good, caring people who work here. But I’m guessing you’re looking for a senior care facility because you or your loved one can’t live alone and needs a certain level of skilled care. Right? Oakmont’s substandard level of care is exactly why this place falls short of the mark.

They hire unskilled workers with no experience working with the elderly and then don’t properly train them with how to do wheelchair transfers, or how to spot the symptoms of a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection), or how to report a fall, or how to properly dress a wound. Once these workers learn to do their job, they realize they can get paid more elsewhere and leave Oakmont. Look Oakmont up on indeed.com and read the worker’s reviews.

The Oakmont management from the Head Nurse up to the Executive Director are no better. They are unresponsive and unconcerned. They straight up DO NOT CARE. They are a cog in the wheel of a corporate entity and their only purpose is to make a buck.

During my mother’s 3 year stay, she suffered multiple UTIs, yet Oakmont was NEVER able to obtain a urine sample and get it to the lab. As a result of the untreated UTI (which causes disorientation), mom had an unreported fall wherein she fractured her pelvis, an unreported change in her status (total incontinence), and went from being a mostly independent assisted living person to being confined to a wheelchair.

I’d recommend looking at the San Carlos Elms for both assisted living and memory care. They are privately owned and non-corporate. Their Executive Director and the nurse have been on the job for 3+ decades and their staff is skilled and well compensated. And Palm Villas has been exceptional for memory care. Garry is the owner and is an extremely caring person. Their staff is really on top of things.

It’s nice to know there are local facilities that do have caring staff that are trained in dealing with the elderly, but Oakmont is not that place.

We have had our parents here for over a year now. It was a hard transition moving them from their life of independence to assisted living. Nicole C has been with us every step of the way from our first visit to move in days to the present. She has been a huge support to our family and parents. And many other staff also have shown consistent professionalism, kindness and compassion. Letty, Ferdi, Gio
, Anna and others. Management to general staff are always helpful and responsive.
Oakmont has tons of activities keeping our parents busy and engaged. They also take them on a variety of weekly outings to parks, museums and lunches. They have access to a beautiful garden area and they bring in
music and entertainment for the residents.
Our parents compliment the food and service provided by staff. We like how staff interacts with the residents and each other.

Please understand that what Oakmont is selling you when you tour and what you are receiving are not even comparable. Yes, it’s a beautiful building and they would like to consider themselves a 5 star facility, they give 1 star care with inexperienced caregivers, 1 star food, and zero stars for the memory care activities. When you tour, if you inquire about the very many negative reviews, you will be told that it’s all from one person/family. This could not be further from the truth. We were the 3rd or 4th family to flee this awful facility with at least 6-8 more families following quickly behind us. I met two families this month alone desperate to move out due care. Feel free to contact me on another platform FB. I am happy to share our experience with you, as well as put you in touch with at least 5-6 other families that can verify our experiences have been horrible and suffered greatly at Oakmont. Plz know this when the tour guide tries to tell you otherwise. A recent reviewer (N) posted about a lovely tour that she had with the tour guide, which seems to be per her google reviews a habit of positive five stars on her tours, but never having a resident there. The tour guide will advertise the hair salon, manicure station, and massage section. No one works in these areas-NO ONE. Take into serious consideration the many negative and honest reviews posted by families who have had loved ones at this facility, suffered greatly and a tremendous cost. This would be an amazing facility for the show undercover boss where they come in and close down the facility due to what they see/hear going on. Inexperienced caregivers with no care experience -just McDonald’s type experience-most likely not what you’re looking for in terms of a caregiver. They speak negatively in Spanish about residents, families and private caregivers. The families that have good care here have to hire full-time private caregivers.Oakmont simply does not have enough staff to cover the residents or provide the care. Management refuses to commit to a staff ratio per resident. The staff they have (which is quite often agency staff since they don’t have enough employees) is too busy attempting to care for the residents to provide any actual mental or physical stimulation in terms of activities. So you will often find your resident with soiled clothing, missing articles of clothing, missing meals, missing medication’s, etc. You will also never received the truth from Staff about your loved one. The food in the memory care is frozen and microwaved yet they advertise 5 star food. My mother was here for 1 1/2 yrs, and her decline was significant due to being left on her own for hours on end with no sort of mental or physical stimulation. The staff place the residents in front of the television, while they tap away on their personal cell phones, ignoring them. They also do not report issues that legally need to be reported such as escaped residents, falls, etc. My mother and several others escaped. No reports made and families not notified. There is a reason that Oakmont of Redwood City does not have a wait list, nor their second floor open. It is because the care is so awful that people are moving their residents out within a very short time. Some have moved out in less than a week and some in a month. Those of us that stayed longer, wish we hadn’t. For our family there were two final straws. My mother is blind, and we had heard rumors of the staff locking residents in their rooms. It was the truth! The trauma that this caused her was extreme. Then the Covid outbreak which they were completely unable to contain due to having no protocol, no testing kits, no idea more than 3 years into Covid how to handle it, placing all of the residents, symptomatic, and asymptomatic next to each other in front of the tv. This resulted in almost all the staff, family members, and almost all of the residents with Covid. We have thankfully moved out our loved one, and we are so happy. She has mentally recovered from the damage done there
Please choose somewhere else.

Oakmont senior living has confirmed for us that corporate care will never be what a smaller senior home can provide. With the focus in corporate being revenue and only revenue, it will simply never compare. Oakmont seems more intent on opening the second floor of memory care even though the first floor has had a mass exodus of residents and vacancies.
Oakmont has been a horribly expensive mistake in every way.
Care providers have no proper skills or experience. Lack of true empathy and patience which was only put on for show when family present.
Zero accountability for falls and other incidents that should have been reported per licensing requirements.
Complete ignorance of dietary needs and requests despite a thorough dietary plan discussed and documented when moving in. So many personal items vanished never to be seen again.
Management that seemed to be barely present and certainly not holding employees accountable for failures. Staff that consistently used the television to entertain the residents instead of engaging with them or providing proper mental or physical activities (while on their own cell phones instead.) We chose this facility based upon the vast array of activities offered believing that this would be an ideal place. Unfortunately, due a chronic and seemingly permanent staff shortage and refusal or inability to hire enough staff and skilled staff means they never have enough people to do more than basic care as they are too busy.
Understand that if you place your family member here without spending the money to also bring in full time private care at your own expense, your family member will essentially be left alone for hours on end as it’s more like renting a room for them with occasional help. This is not by any means the care advertised nor the care appropriate for a memory care facility.

I wish I could give oakmont zero stars
Unfortunately, that’s not an option so let me clarify that the one star review is for the facility because the building itself is beautiful. There is nothing else beautiful about this facility. The care is well below average and this is well represented by by the fact that they do not have a wait list, despite having two floors for memory care. We and so many other people have moved out because of the poor care. We found it incredibly frustrating that the staffing shortages were consistent, staff changeover was alarming and management, seemingly never present in the memory care. Management refuses to commit to a resident/staff ratio. They are consistently shorthanded and caregivers and requiring agency staff to provide care. The activities that were so heavily promised when we decided to move here never seemed to happen. Garden club, cooking club, walking club, arts, instead, the television became the sole source of entertainment. This was most definitely not what we signed up for, and not what we were promised in their advertisements. They seem to be attempting to silence those with their reviews who have honestly had a terrible experience there. They have been posting positive reviews that not only make zero sense, but are not true. Please learn from our mistakes in selecting this facility and choose somewhere else. Oakmont cannot keep their promises in terms of the care and you will be left not only greatly disappointed, but also add an incredible expense.

We really wanted to like this place. It is new and beautiful and close to home for us to visit. Unfortunately we quickly realized that -that is ALL it is. Please don't be fooled by this shiny modern facility! The price is incredibly high and the care leaves MUCH to be desired. You will be assured that your family member has eaten, not fallen, has done activities today, but that is probably not the case as me and my siblings quickly learned. Oakmont simply does not have enough staff to accommodate all of the daily activities that they advertise, much less daily basic care. My parent frequently had unexplained bruising and scratches. Since she is in the memory care part of Oakmont, it seemed all too convenient that at my mom couldn't share what happened and the staff did not offer any information. My understanding is that legally, however, when there IS an incident, these must be documented and reported. Am I wrong? This is simply not done. I was told by one of the private caregivers (hired to give extra assistance by a family because Oakmont only provides the most basic of care for your loved one) that my mother had gotten out of the facility. She did not just get out into the contained yard on site, she got OUT of the facility! Inexplicably, no one informed our family. They place full plates of food, an uncut sandwich, etc on the dining table and these fragile residents are expected to feed themselves. Would it really be too much to cut the meals into little pieces and ensure that the residents are at least able to ingest so basic nutrition? If your parent requires the most minimal amount of extra assistance well then that is going to cost you MORE! When you visit, you may not even easily find your parent! I found my mother fully clothed and asleep on the toilet in the general sitting area, staff had no idea where she was. For the astronomical monthly amount paid you might expect that they would at least put the clean laundry away, but no. Clothing is in piles in their rooms, frequently missing items even though clearly marked with black permanent marker. Other possessions went missing without explanation. The resident to staff ratio is severely lacking and we often couldn't even find staff to assist with buzzing us out of the building when departing. What happens in an emergency? Is this why residents are often seen with soiled clothing after being unable to locate a bathroom alone? Lastly, kudos to you if you speak Spanish because the conversations the staff have amongst themselves about you and your resident are incredibly unkind and unprofessional.

I’ve personally never seen such sparse staff in a care facility. For the amount charged it would be assumed that there would be a much higher staff to resident ratio. While the facility is new and beautiful, anything appealing ends there. The food is bland and repetitive, the same meager choices. My mother lost a lot of weight because she couldn’t manage to feed herself sufficiently and there didn’t seem to be anyone noticing that she needed assistance. The lack of engagement with the residents is equally puzzling. The activities advertised don’t happen. Placing elderly people in front of the television for hours on end is not providing mental stimulation. It’s most definitely not a place I would recommend at all.
