I don’t recommend ORISE unless you are a student coming out of a program and want a temporary “internship” as a stepping stone to a better opportunity. Working with ORISE is a type of internship, but they don’t really advertise it as an internship though… ask a lot of questions and read the fine print. You will be treated like a contractor when you do not get the same benefits that a regular contractor would.

I was misled by the person who hired me at usamriid and was not fully aware that I would not qualify for unemployment benefits in the event that my contract was cut.

My job function was constantly modified without ORISE stepping in to assist in clarifying what my job duties were. I was hired as a microbiologist initially. The extra position of “laboratory manager” was added on. Eventually by the time I left Usamriid, I was building a database—I was basically doing several jobs for one salary and had no one in my corner to defend me. I just had to do anything they asked me to, and ORISE never stepped in to try and regulate what my job position was. It was incredibly stressful to not have any protection as a contracted employee through ORISE.

Although employees are ORISE are friendly, they didn’t do much in the way of helping clarify my job duties. I don’t recommend anyone embark on this type of employment arrangement unless it is STRICTLY TEMPORARY and you get it in writing that you will be hired full-time through a full-fledged contracting company at some point.
