There fees are outrageous compared to every other shelter in East TN. I was denied a adoption application for a dismissed charge also concocted by Oak Ridge PD. I have a wonderful loving home and spent a week and a half trying to obtain the pup I wanted but was denied before being given the chance to love and care for the dog. He needed a home but the morons who run this place care more about money and class B4 the welfare of the animals! Just more government scum!

We take our girls to the animal shelter every weekend we can, to play with the kittens. We would like to adopt one eventually but not right now. But the kids love to visit. Everyone there is so friendly and tells the girls they appreciate them coming to spend time with the animals. Our favorite is Bellabea, she is so cuddly and sweet. I can't thank the volunteers enough for being so nice to my kids.

If I could give this place 0 stars I absolutely would. Earlier in the week, I filled out an application to adopt as there are LOTS of cute kitties there who just need a loving home. I never heard anything back about the application and thought that was strange. However, they were having an event at Pet Supplies Plus in Oak Ridge today where we found a bonded pair of cats we would love to have. As we were filling out the application, I mentioned that I had filled an application out earlier in the week and hadn't heard anything back. Someone called the main office for me and said that we needed to verify vaccination records with our vet in Florida because the vet in Knoxville was not able to do so. We frantically called the vet in Florida and got the vaccination records, and hurried to the shelter because the man there had asked us to come talk to him about "the vaccine records." So we drive out there, and the place STINKS and office animals look mistreated. We asked about the vaccine records, and he said, "oh, you are red flagged to adopt from here because you indicated on the form that you would allow the cat outside." He could have provided education and allowed us to reapply but instead he lectured us about how " you can't know what a cat will do when it's outside," and, "it decreases the cat's life expectancy from 20 years down to 5 years" and "we care too much about our cats to let someone like that adopt them." When we had been letting our maincoon sit with us on the porch and he lived for many happy years. Additionally, they had a cat that they were leash training- what in heck were they leash training it for? To walk around the house? Ugh such a bad experience when they could have just told us no via phone instead of sending us on wild goose chase.

We were both in tears in the car, and we decided to stop at Knoxville Humane Society where we adopted a 2 year old cat and were met with nothing but love and kindness. We explained our situation to the lady there, and she said that they try to be nice to potential adopters because they want to give the cat the best life. She also said other people have had similar experiences....no wonder there are soooooo many cats at Oak Ridge Humane Society. Lord, that man made my blood boil. Anyways, just go to Knoxville and save yourself the trouble.

Very friendly and helpful.. but it does have a smell to it when you first walk in. Other than that they we'll talk to you and give you information and let you vist with the animal you are interested in.

Walked in and the place smelled absolutely horrible. The ammonia smell from urine burned my nose and made my eyes water. Wanting to adopt 2 kittens, we filled out the 2 page (front & back) application, and left. Fast forward to 4 business days later and still can't adopt these kittens due to lack of management and they can't make a flipping phone call to a vet's office to verify. Such a waste of a business. No wonder they are over run with cats and dogs.

i would also give this place 0 stars if possible…i tried to adopt a kitten and they told me the process takes 1-2 days. it has been 3 weeks now and i have not heard a single word about the status of my application. they say they hope all of their animals get adopted but you can even see on their faces that they do not mean a word they say.

Seemed super nice at first but staff and volunteers took some jokes my husband made as a red flag that we not suitable to adopt and banned us. We didn't find out until our 3rd visit in the sane day and after submitting an application and all of our vet records for our other 4 adopted pets. We were really excited about welcoming a furbaby. Don't make jokes; they'll think you're serious and break your heart.
