Plenty of spaces at 9am on Monday 8/26. Cascade creek trail to crater lake was the perfect overnight for a first time solo backpack. Definitely challenging with a loaded pack, took 4.5 hours to reach camp.

Note: When we came, the trail still had significant snow pack/muddy sections on the north side of the trail. I’d check the trail status on All Trails before heading out.

Beautiful scenery, and a relatively moderate hike. Trail was well marked and maintained. Since the trail wraps around the lake, the elevation change is minimal. There are some ups and downs, but still suitable for younger kids up for a longer hike.

I took my two kids and dog to do the hike around the lake. Though the place is quite busy, it’s not too bad once you venture out into the woods. Overall, it was an easy and beautiful hike. The water is clear and refreshing. The scenery throughout was enjoyable. There were incessant butterflies fluttering around, perhaps this is why it is named Monarch Lake? Regardless, we all enjoyed ourselves. The hike would normally take an hour, but with the three year old, it took us about two hours, which included stops to wade through the shallow rivers….peaceful and pleasant day trip indeed!

Trail is shaded for most of the hike, semi-busy with families and dogs...but everyone very polite. To get to the trail head one has to drive about nine miles on gravel, wash-boarded with potholes. Just need to drive slowly. We saw a moose, mule deer, and a variety of wild flowers. Even with fellow hikers, the hike is very peaceful. I highly recommend.

When I did this hike, it was a chilly, misty/rainy day, yet it was still beautiful! Trail easily defined and walk able. Beautiful views along the whole trail. Pretty level, not many hills to scale. Beautiful trail around the lake and through the woods.

Great low key hike, was not too extreme but had some hills and different terrain to keep it interesting. Saw a moose off in the distance. Was a very picturesque hike and one the whole family can do. Parking seemed to fill up a lot though. We started hike by 10am and seemed like we got there before the big rush.

Amazing hike, suggest you hike it clockwise. The area about 3 mi is still flooded but if you're careful you can jump from log to log like qbert did so many years ago to get across without getting wet. Probably very difficult to get through if you have your dog with you though..

This 4 mile trail was probably the best I had when I visited Grand Lake. It had started raining when we arrived. So we stayed under shelter with the park rangers who happened to be locking up. They were really friendly. The downpour stopped after 15 minutes, making the weather the perfect hiking weather. Worth a try!
