The one and only time I went here was when I took my shahada. I didn't necessarily plan it that way, but that's how it turned out as I wanted it to be authentic and not planned in advance. Anyways, I think the Imam assumed I didn't know anything about Islam, because he asked if I had talked to the sisters, which was odd to me, but maybe this is the norm for converts. I then informed him that I had been studying Islam on and off for five years. Anyways, when I took my shahada, the Imam said, "I'll say it in Arabic and then in English so you know what you're saying." I was highly offended by this as well, because he assumed I didn't know what I was going to say, which was false. I would have preferred to say it in Arabic only, but couldn't get a word in edge wise. Then after the shahada was done I was approached by a sister there that I had never met, and she immediately started telling me about Islamic eating restrictions, which I was aware of years before I converted. I thought this was very tacky and I informed her that I didn't want to have the haram police conversation and conveyed to her that I was more familiar with Islam than she might think. I think, based on my shahada experience at this masjid and other convert stories, I think that attendees and clergy need to be respectful and not assume that converts don't know anything about Islam and allow them to navigate and ask for help when they need it. Or just simply say, "do you have any questions?" and/or, "here's my number, I'm here to answer any questions." And there was another overbearing, highly uncomfortable exchange via phone by this same sister two days later, but I'll keep that story to myself because I don't want to bust her out more than I already have. Not how I pictured coming into Islam, but it is what it is. I have no doubt that the Imam and sister meant well, but it was a bad experience just the same. I won't be back to this masjid for all the above reasons and others having to do with general masjid culture that are not exclusive to this masjid. I recently heard of another local masjid that requires at least 2 pre conversion counseling sessions, which I think should be a requirement at every masjid. I wish I would have heard about and done this in addition to my personal, pre conversion Islamic research.
