I went on a kayaking trip in May of this year, shortly after surgical treatment for lung cancer. The experience was incredible, and was the best thing for me at that time. I was able to bond with other patients in a "summer camp"-like atmosphere with the most wonderful FD employees and volunteers. I've also gotten to go on Community Adventures with other participants, and I can't say enough about how wonderful the First Descents community is. It is such a worthy organization!

People say there's no such thing as perfect, but having just returned from my FD1 kayaking trip in Rogue River, OR, I can honestly say that I came as close to perfection as I ever have in my almost 40 years on Earth. Was stoked beforehand reading reviews w/adjectives like "life changing, phenomenal, transformative," yet now having done it, I can honestly say they are a severe understatement. Even w/my extensive vocabulary, I have no words to describe what the First Descents (plus the Sundance Kayak School) staff on my trip (who shall remain nameless for reasons past participants will understand) did for me, as well as the 11 others w/me, all of whom started off as strangers & turned into dear people I'll never forget. The fact that 12 cancer patients, from remission to terminal, all went from quaking knees to kicking kayak rear end on a Class 3 rapids in 4 days should say it all, but it was so much more than that. I could go on & on, as those I've met in the past week can attest to (haha), but for once I'll keep it kind of short & super sweet. Much <3, Pip
