On August 31, 2019 I was admitted to North Valley Hospital in Whitefish with abdominal pain. Once the diagnosis was made that I had a twisted bowel and would need to have an emergency colonoscopy to see if the process would untwist the bowel. When I was admitted into the hospital, we made it clear that we did not want to be seen by people who were not in my network, which is Cigna. For the most part both hospitals were pretty good about maintaining this in network request. It turned out that this procedure could not be done at North Valley Hospital, so the hospital contacted Evergreen Fire and Rescue to provide the ambulance ride from Whitefish to Kalispell. I have never used an ambulance service before, so I did not know all the ins and outs to using that service. We did specifically ask if we could avoid the ambulance and have my wife drive me to Kalispell. The hospital maintained that we couldn’t do that, by using the ambulance it would fast track the process at Kalispell Regional Medical Center. So, they loaded me into the ambulance. I had no IVs or any other monitoring, during the ride to Kalispell, so no life giving aid. This ride happened around midnight. This was about a 12 mile or a twenty minute ride. Well my procedure didn’t happen until around 5:30 AM. So it doesn’t seem to have been much of a fast track. This ambulance ride was not in network.

If I knew then, what I know now, I would have checked myself out of Whitefish and my wife would have driven me to Kalispell and we would have checked into Kalispell Regional Medical Center ourselves.
This ambulance ride cost $1,179.36. Now if it would have been in my network with Cigna, the charge would have been $535.42, which we have already paid out of pocket. But since they are out of network, we are still on the hook for $643.94. This is a very outrageous price for nothing more than taxi ride, because, as I said, there was no monitoring or life giving aid in this transport. I don’t have an issue with them getting paid, but I do have an issue with overcharging for their service.

I called 911 and rode in the ambulance. They submitted claim to my insurance, my insurance said I owed $0 per their contract with the ambulance company. They then sent their $1700 bill (which was illegal). When I didn't pay, they sent me to collections.
