The concept and services provided for young people are amazing- left with a book of stunning poetry from 8-13 year olds. The day I went it was hosting a fundraiser to Shut Down Etowah! Great partnerships with the community.

Desert Island Supply Company (a.k.a. DISCO) is a great resource for children's literacy and community projects. Their mission "is to give Birmingham-area students more opportunities to write and create," and they do that with free writing and creativity workshops for kids 7-18, plus tutoring and other educational opportunities. DISCO also functions as a community space for a few local artists and groups.

The space itself, located right next to Woodrow Hall in Woodlawn, is fantastic. It's themed on adventure and travel and desert islands, and the decor really backs up that aesthetic and fosters the imagination. In the front of the space is a little shop that sells creativity and writing-themed books, letterpress prints, journals and fun little items.

DISCO does great work in a great space!
