The only thing good is the amentities of the new building.
Otherwise, most staff and other residents are as abhorrent as any other shelter.
Also, staff will literally cancel meals for everyone (yes, even for diabetics and new clients who may not have eaten in days), if no one willingly "volunteers" to serve food. As if they can't simply hire 5 more people.

Keep your CEOs accountable. I wrote to the owner, not that he's responded or will even remember my name in a few months. But someone had to say something.

I was a client for 3 months. The staff & the security are very good at thier jobs. The case workers are knowledgeabl in howcto help the clients find a place to live in order to leave the shelter. Overall my stay there was enjoyable

All shelters in dallas are nasty, they barely have staff to work in the shelter! The restroom are nasty! The food they be giving is donated food, and it gets people sick! The people treat you with no respect, they look down on people in the shelter! They could be in a position like this if you lost everything! The food here gets me sick to my stomach! The only good thing is you have a roof over your head. I already had a job before I came here, and they don't help you get nothing all..All the staff that work in these shelters say they care, but they only here for a paycheck from what I seen, basically you have to help yourself

Ok... where do I start? Great place & concept. Housing programs available. Austin Street shelter provides food, clothing, shelter. Toiletries & insurance assistance. Job certifications. Job placement... counseling, therapy, health care & a warm bed. Corporate staff are passionate & eagerly want to fill beds & want to see full bellies. But, lower level employees are burned out. They are aggressive and condescending. moreover disrespectful to clients living at the shelter. Residents are treated like inmates. I've seen staff members eager to put people back out on the streets. I've seen lower-level staff members who rather see food in the garbage than in people's bellies. I stayed longer than I needed to and left only after I could no longer take disrespect from lower level staff. I did take advantage of opportunities offered by Austin Street Shelter. I left after no longer being able to tolerate condescending disrespectful verbiage tones and treatment by lower level staff. I volunteered assisted in food service. I even gave money food and clothes to some of the residents. Austin Street Shelter is a great place should be used as a step to get to your destination but can easily turn into quicksand. I pray that I never returned but I am grateful and thankful for the opportunities I had while staying at the shelter.

Volunteered here all the time to make and serve food to the folks here. Everyone is so kind and chill. Helping out here was a great and orderly experience and I highly recommend anyone looking into a service program that helps the people in this community to go ahead and do it. One time, another place had just donated a bunch of sweets just before we served our food, so we were able to have some of those as well, it was a happy surprise for everyone!
