I visited the Whittier Nature Center last July, and although this review is long overdue, the experience has truly stayed with me. I had found a tiny bird in need of help, and Colleen, the sweetest and most knowledgeable person, kindly guided me through what to do. She told me to bring the bird in, and once I arrived, she took over with such care and expertise, explaining the next steps for the little one.

While I was there, I had a brief tour of the grounds, and I was amazed by how peaceful and clean everything was. The center’s mission is truly beautiful, and you can feel the dedication of the volunteers in every corner. I haven’t stopped thinking about this place since my visit and would love to volunteer myself once my schedule allows.

My family lived across the street from the Audubon Society on Durfee Rd in So El Monte from 1949-1963, until properties were bought out for the now SEMHS! My brothers & sisters loved going to see all the live critters they had on display. We walked those long beautiful trails . What a great life that was back then, we had a great childhood but now we’re all Senior Citizens with our memories of good ole Durfee Rd. Now, Those were the good old days. Memories , we all need memories!!❤️

This nature center is open.. good spot to educate your children and yourself.
Can stop by and have lunch outside which has picnic tables under trees for shade.. outside are areas were live animal's are kept in captivity..Such as several turtles,red tail hawk,, owl,, racoons,,and other animals.. inside the museum are live Snakes such as King snakes, rat snakes gopher snake & a rosey boa snakes.also Tarantulas.. display of various taxidermied animals displayed throughout the museum.
Including a gift shop. The associates that work here have great attitudes and friendly..the bathrooms here are very well Maintained with tissues & soap for hygiene care.. the trails here are full of reptiles,,my advice were high laced boots cus there's Snakes around the whole nature center including rattle Snakes and other creatures that blend in with the terrains here throughout the trails . this nature center here @ Whittier Narrows is safe to visit even though homeless have been seen to gather in the trails...the El Monte Police pass through here on a regular basis which makes it more safe for visitors.. come check it out with the young ones,, I'm sure they'll be surprised to see the live animals & reptiles kept in captivity..pack a lunch with some refreshments and snacks for kids and spend a day here and the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area which is located across the street from the Whittier Narrows Nature center..

There are bike path and walking trails south to it.
The restroom is very clean and quiet because not much people here. Sometimes the workers are more than visitors. I like it. +++++
There is a program of "Nature In A Bag" on Wednesday to Saturday from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM.
I found this place on the way home after I bought breakfast in nearby McDonald.
I drove in and found I was the only visitor. I decided to eat breakfast here because there were tables and seats on big tree shades. Also was there a fresh feeling and breeze.
I ate my breakfast with thanking God.

This place is always so calm and cool. There us a lot of shade here compared to parks where the main feature is grass that is well kept. The main feature of this area is the natural state of many plants and animals. There are more clearly manmade trails now, but it's still not just a lawn on either side of it.

Everyone is very nice they have educational groups and I loved it here. Restrooms are clean. They have a night walk and will post pics of that when I do the walk.
