Upon phoning the Santa Cruz branch of the Social Security office to enroll in Medicare, I had the misfortune of speaking with a representative named Steven, who was shockingly abrasive, impatient, rude, and condescending. I was literally in tears after our conversation, with multiple questions and concerns left unaddressed.

As a US government employee paid by our taxes to fulfill this critical role, Steven has an obligation to treat the public with courtesy and respect, rather than with derision and humiliation. Seriously, I feel that Steven should lose his job. (Please note that this review specifically refers to my interaction with Steven. Other local Social Security office representatives from whom I’ve sought advice have been helpful and kind.)

Unfortunate federal entity that doesn't work with the county housing authorities cuz they're are no specific performance selection available
with provisions for disabled and other. Federal monies are allocated to each housing authority, who's directors make the rules. The ADA control discrimination in housing by accommodation including website advertising. So if a disabled individual in Monterey county would have no preference on the lotto list July 1-12th 2024. Reckless disregard for homeless, displaced housing, other priorities but categories are honored in Santa Cruz county and results contemporaneous law abrogation fail Monterey county, and second fails as there no housing vouchers since 2018 in Santa Cruz county.
So you wonder why there's so many homeless running around and few soc sec nuts on psychotropic drugs from the psychiatrist that can do a damn thing about housing. And they can't function on the street because they have not had proper intellectual training other than possibly a many a high school diploma, well that will get you the benefits for jail psychiatry. So when this victim person finally gets a job soc sec employees mechanically process the victim under social security law that doesn't apply to immediate housing with the employment. After the appeals process, advised you too late on the pass plan which is in another county Sacramento, that has nothing to do with Santa Cruz, unintentionally eliminating the Jade Street Capitola, Department of rehabilitation. Immediately as soon as you sign the paperwork under 504 it's a release of liability so they can pay you less wages or continue to reckless disregard, has most private employers prefer locals.
In 1989 I submitted a supreme Court criminal certiorari because each housing authority in each state had to pay hundred? of thousands of dollars to be eligible for vouchers, embezzlement and other too. Yes, director was convicted and they all applauded on TV. Not just like the FAA wait for a victim of an airline till they get burned out. But really what have they done. Housing Matters a business has offered a deposit by Santa Cruz county for the deposit if that individual stays there 6 months, other.
RVs are the way to go and it's more suitable but the county has replaced restrictions on the size because of the popularity which long lines of victims get harassed by local police. Santa Cruz's climate is a reason for disabled to lounge out other counties for housing.

Phoned this office (to make an appointment) on 800 number; waited the 15 minutes the recording warned me about. Was then put through to a pleasant agent who was extremely helpful, kind and clear, who looked up my info online, answered my questions and advised me when to return to their office to make an appointment for further information when eligible for benefits. An entirely satisfactory phone call! Thank you!
Subsequent visit was also very successful.

Terrible security guard, poor communication.
I have tried to connect with this office for over two weeks and they are not available over the phone or in person. I decided to turn in paperwork and was met by a very aggressive security guard. I had assured him I didn't have any guns knives or pepper spray on me after he asked and he proceeded to ask me again, 3 times. I was only trying to file paperwork and was treated like a threat. This was a very negative experience.

Basking In Obscurity

It's a bureaucracy, so of course there are some issues to be expected. That said, the Santa Cruz Social Security office has always been a pleasure (for bureaucracy) to work with. They've never steered me wrong and always been helpful and patient. The only time I have had much of a wait is a couple of times as a walk-in (no appointment); but even then it's usually not too bad a wait. Also on the phone I've had only nice experiences. Now, Santa Cruz has a lot of inconsiderate and rude people, sometimes belligerent; but I have yet to experience it from the staff at this office, though some of the clientele have left something to be desired. Though I'd not choose to hang out there for fun and kicks, in the context of government offices they deserve all five stars.

CURRENTLY NOT OPEN TO PUBLIC. Online only. It's very misleading that your website says you are open. And then one drives all the way down there, and it says appointment only on the papers on the door. But there is no actual way to make appointments at the moment.

The bureaucracy makes me want to pull my hair out. They messed up when I applied for new cards for my husband and I after we got married, because we are both changing our names. They sent me a new card after a month. A week or two later they sent a letter saying they couldn't give my husband a new card because I didn't send proof of name change. Even though the marriage certificate I sent for both of us has our name changed on the bottom. The lady I talked to at first was like oh well the marriage certificate doesn't count for the husband, and uh, yes it does. So I had to send it all back in again. Time to wait for another month.

I followed all instructions and forms to be put back on Medicare Part B and was denied - SS has records of my original A and B coverage as well as my employer coverages to date. I can't go in for appointments due to covid restrictions, fax and tues/wed dropbox only for documents. They gave me additional incorrect information over the phone. SC office is making it ridiculously hard for me to get the benefits owed to me, and I get penalized with a Part D surcharge and vulnerable to part B lack of coverage the longer I go without Part B. What a joke! Do they realize that they are dealing with human lives and health?
